About Amaryllis Bulbs

  • Scientific name: Hippeastrum (though commonly called Amaryllis)

  • Family: Amaryllidaceae

  • Origin: Native to South America, particularly Brazil, Peru, and Argentina.

  • Flower type: Large, trumpet-shaped blooms, available in red, white, pink, salmon, orange, striped, or multicolor.

  • Growth type: Grown from large, fleshy bulbs that store energy to produce flowers.

Bulb Characteristics

  • Shape: Round to oval, with papery brown outer layers.

  • Size: Larger bulbs (8–12 cm in diameter) produce more and bigger flowers.

  • Life span: Long-lived, can bloom for many years if cared for well.

Planting Time

  • Best planted in autumn or winter indoors (for winter/spring blooms).

  • In tropical climates, they can be planted outdoors almost year-round, avoiding extreme heat.

How to Plant Amaryllis Bulbs

  1. Container or Ground?

    • Indoors: Use a pot 2–5 cm wider than the bulb.

    • Outdoors: Well-draining soil, raised beds preferred.

  2. Depth:

    • Leave the top 1/3 of the bulb above the soil to prevent rot.

  3. Soil:

    • Well-draining mix—garden soil + sand + compost (or potting mix with added perlite).

  4. Watering:

    • Water once after planting, then sparingly until shoots appear.

    • Keep soil slightly moist, not soggy.

  5. Light:

    • Bright, indirect sunlight indoors.

    • Outdoors—morning sun, afternoon shade.

Blooming Cycle

  • Usually blooms 6–10 weeks after planting.

  • Each bulb can produce 1–3 flower stalks, with 2–6 blooms each.

  • Flowers last 2–3 weeks.

After Flowering Care

  • Cut the flower stalk after blooms fade, but keep the leaves to allow energy storage in the bulb.

  • Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 2–4 weeks.

  • Reduce watering as leaves start to yellow, then allow bulb to go dormant for 8–12 weeks before replanting.

Care Tips

  • Fertilizer: Balanced (10-10-10) during growth; high potash before dormancy.

  • Temperature: Prefers 18–24°C while growing, slightly cooler during dormancy.

  • Pests/Diseases: Watch for bulb rot, red blotch (fungus), mealybugs, and aphids.
